Community Murals in the Dominican Republic
The Colegio Evangelico Asher is located in La UniĆ³n, a small community about a 20 minutes drive from Puerto Plata.
The school is mostly attended by Haitian children who until a few years ago received classes in an old shed. The Samaritan Foundation has now built them a nice big school with enough space to expand in the future. (Currently there are 300 students, but there’s place for 500). The Dutch Foundation Colour4Kids commissioned two murals that were designed in collaboration with the director of the school. The theme of the first mural is children’s rights, the second one depicts the Mirabal sisters, the national heroines who fought against Trujillo’s dictatorship and were killed in 1961. It took us four days to complete the two murals (2.75 x 3m) which were –very important!- approved by the kids.
